Sheldwich 2nd XI v Shipbourne 2nd XI
Saturday 19th July 2003

After Skipper Stanford won the toss and elected to bat on a scorching afternoon, the Second XI got off to a cracking start and never looked back in winning by the margin of 191 runs.

Stanford himself batted almost throughout the 46 overs and scored a career-best 145, combining solid defence when necessary with a range of scintillating attacking shots which brought him 19 fours and 4 sixes - a hundred runs in boundaries. He was thrilled to be watched by both his father and his grandfather, who confirmed that his was the highest score by any Stanford in living memory, Well done, Philip !. There were four stands of 50 or more during the innings, 57 for the first wicket with Marcus Hodges reaching 29; 70 for the second with debutant Mark Hover; 56 for the third with returning veteran Steve Blythin (32) and 51 for the fifth with Ian Hulks (18). 287 was a truly massive score, even allowing for the short leg side boundary to the road.

Shipbourne never threatened to make a real challenge with the bat, but put up some solid early resistance, reaching 54 before the fall of their second wicket. The introduction of Simon Brissenden ( 2-17 ), and David Knight (4 - 9) in his eight overs rapidly changed the complexion of the game, and with Tony Creed picking up his usual couple, the opposition subsided to 96 all out - a win therefore by 191 runs. Next week we travel to Linton Park, before the crunch game on August 2nd against league leaders Bearsted.
